For delegates with specific interests, PAINWeek has organized courses into the following concentrations. Please note that all delegates are welcome to attend any of the courses being offered at PAINWeek.  Delegates are NOT required to declare a curriculum concentration to attend PAINWeek.

All delegates attending PAINWeek will also receive a PAINWeek Delegate Certificate. Those fully completing all of the requirements of any of the curriculum concentrations below along with an outcomes survey will receive recognition of their specific concentration on their certificate.

Please refer to the course descriptions or agenda for more information.

Concentration Descriptions

Practicum in Pain Management
Practicum in Pain Management is a two-day course at PAINWeek that is focused on pain assessment, diagnostics, mechanisms, and cultural values that impact successful pain management. This portion of the PAINWeek curriculum is most valuable for clinicians who would like to master the “basics” before pursuing more advanced perspectives on pain management. The Practicum also covers two very important clinical skills that are often overlooked in post-graduate education: basic interviewing and physical exam proficiency.

Concentration Requirements
P-1 through P-16

Pain Educators Forum
The Pain Educators Forum can most easily be understood as implementation of the information disseminated at the Practicum. Every other Practicum plenary will have an accompanying breakout session that will “teach you how to teach” the clinical pearls gleaned from the lectures. As clinicians, we are called upon on a daily basis to be educators—via the “curbside consult” or more formal presentations to clinical peers.  The format and direction of the Pain Educators Forum is “knowledge in action”, ie, how we apply what we learn in our practice environments.

Concentration Requirements
P-1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, & 15; PE-1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 21,

Fundamentals in Pain Management is jointly sponsored by the Western Pain Society and has been developed to cover areas of pain management and palliative care that have become state-mandated by Oregon and California. While the Fundamentals course is open to all PAINWeek delegates, it will be of particular interest to clinicians who need to fulfill their state requirements in continuing medical education in pain management and palliative care. Highlights of the Fundamentals Course are the multi-course presentations on pain syndromes, and in-depth material on opioid and non-opioid analgesia. Additionally, Fundamentals will also present timely and relevant information on special populations and interventional pain management.

Concentration Requirements
FP-1 through FP-12

The Behavioral Track is emblematic of the unique format of PAINWeek—there is something for everyone. This concentration has been developed for psychologists and other healthcare professionals managing the behavioral side of pain management. The Behavioral Track covers psychological assessment available when considering opioid therapy, multidisciplinary approaches, and the role of clinical practice guidelines. The Behavioral Track is composed of a selection of course material found in the Practicum, Pain Educators Forum, and Fundamentals programs.

Concentration Requirements
P-1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 13, & 16; PE-5, 9, 13, 31, 101, & 102; and

Office-Based Opioid Treatment (OBOT)
Office-Based Opioid Treatment (OBOT) is a full-day course presented by the American Osteopathic Academy of Addiction Medicine. This course is focused on the treatment of opioid addiction, including addiction to prescription opioid analgesics such as oxycodone, hydrocodone, morphine, and other opioids with abuse potential. While the treatment of opioid dependence with medications has previously been limited to the methadone clinic system, federal legislation now allows for treatment of this disorder by qualified physicians using buprenorphine in an office-based setting. By completing the course you will qualify for category 1A-AOA CME Credit for the live portion of study and 4 hours AAFP Prescribed Credit hours, which are eligible for the AMA’s Physician Recognition Award Credit.
