Supported by Endo Pharmaceuticals.
Program Rationale:
Opioid therapy is often the cornerstone of treatment for moderate to severe acute and chronic pain. An individualized assessment and treatment plan is critical to successful pain management. A common component of effective pain management may include the progression through multiple opioids until finding the best balance of analgesia and tolerability.
Furthermore, regulatory actions have attempted to address the rise of prescription drug abuse, particularly with opioids. This in turn has created the need to utilize ongoing monitoring approaches that best emphasize management of risk assessment and stratification that incorporate awareness of potential or presence of abuse.
Taking these factors into account, the current regulatory, legal, and societal environment of opioid use requires an extra level of consideration before determining the most appropriate, individualized treatment strategy for the management of a patient’s pain.
Program Objectives:
This program is designed to help practitioners frame the discussion about appropriate and responsible opioid use by:
- Reviewing current strategies used in the management of moderate to severe acute and chronic pain including the various opioids available for their use, their formulations, how they work
- Helping to determine the best ways to assess a patient in order to formulate an individualized treatment plan to optimize outcomes
- Summarizing clinical evidence supporting long-term pain management strategies
- Helping practitioners meet patient needs while satisfying regulatory requirements associated with appropriate opioid use
